Tanchjim Hana: Unboxing

Table of Contents

Introduction

Tanchjim is probably most well known for their Oxygen, a $280 single dynamic IEM tuned Harman-ish just like the Moondrop metal shell dynamic IEMs (Kanas Pro, KXXS and Starfield). Now in terms of raw technicalities, I thought the Oxygen outperformed the Moondrop dynamics though the nearly-$300 price tag was too much to swallow for most, hence the Oxygen’s relatively stagnant popularity relative to their Moondrop counterparts.

The Hana, from the outside at least, looks to be Tanchjim’s equivalent of the Starfield: the exact same build shape as the Oxygen, the lower price tag, even down to the paint-baking job that warranted a dedicated warning on the box to tell users about the potential flaking of the exterior. That’s a bit of a yikes from me, but we’ll see if the Hana’s paint durability issue would be as bad as the Starfield’s with the user reports rolling in in the coming weeks.

So naturally with all these similarities indicating that Tanchjim has gone full “Starfield” on us with the Hana (even down to the anime mascot that Moondrop’s so well-known for these days), I’ve been extremely excited at the prospect of a “budget Oxygen” that would fight with the likes of the Starfield’s already-insane value proposition. So now it’s time to answer the question that’s on everyone’s mind: does the Hana fulfill our expectations?

Non-audio opinions

My unboxing posts are pretty much the only times I’ll ever talk about build quality, accessories and the like. I’m not really the person to ask about these things as I don’t really care about them that much.

Accessories

  • Semi-hard pleather zip case
  • Tips
  • Replacement mesh filters

Cable: 2-wire wrapped in sheathing, so essentially single-wire. Relatively flexible with no stiff points.

Connection: slightly recessed 0.78mm 2-pin connection. Not as snug and secure as I’d have liked, but it’ll do.

Build: potential issues with the paint job given that it seems to be similar to the Starfield’s (which were notoriously prone to nicks, scratches and peels). Otherwise, a full metal build that should withstand a decent amount of abuse.

Fit: same issues with the Oxygen, a little too short for a secure deeper fit and the flat concha area can be uncomfortable for smaller ears.

Isolation: average to below-average, would not be my first choice for outdoors use.

Initial impressions

  • … this is not the “Budget Oxygen” we’ve all been expecting.
  • The Hana is noticeably peakier and shoutier than the Oxygen, which sounds almost tame in comparison (and for context, I already felt that the Oxygens were already borderline-harsh at times).
  • Still a very technical set that’s pretty much bottlenecked by its tuning. Kind of BL05-ish in presentation, but even shoutier, kinda?

  1. Can you test it by adding the included filters? Some people say it smoothens out the treble peakiness.

  2. I tried adding filter thing and it definitely smoothed out upper mids and lower treble but maybe decreased the resolution little bit.
